Regina Spektor is wicked cool
Just listened to some random indie interview with Regina Spektor, partially out of interest to her music and to observe interview techniques for my journalistic aspirations. It's cool to see a slightly fringe-y musician still focused on common appeal and being so down to earth. Plus, she's got a wicked cute voice.
My favourite quote so far?
Interviewer: Is it more flattering for someone to be comfortable with your music, or really confused, and thrown off guard, or maybe challenged?
Regina: No, it's not. I understand it, and am very, very aware my music's not for everybody. I'm amazed and just happy this many people have gravitated towards it... You know, there are those people that are, like, avant-garde snobs or indie snobs and they're, like, there to challenge you- and I think, I think that's a very condescending, didactic, horrible way of making art. To me that's like a fucking nightmare... I think that people are really smart and really intuitive, and really cool, and I work very, very hard to write something that's not gonna bore them.
Here's the interview, its a bit lengthy, probably need quicktime:

P.S. She also mentioned Dostoevsky, which makes me feel better about having to do an ISU on Crime and Punishment.

Good, but not publishable
To those who feel more cultured than the rest of us.
You glorious ex-Europeans,
you eminent imminent emigrants,
and those who follow your aura.
We, the people of the country in which you live,
are grievously sorry that
everything that has made us who we are
has obviously just been something you've been forced to tolerate
for all this time.
We know its not easy,
to live in this sad place,
where our buildings are not historical,
where our green, rolling fields
are few and far between.
We apologize
that this isn't Rome
or Geneva,
though you can kindly find them
on the other side of the ocean
if its so important to you.

"Someone asked me today what I like people to do when I play, and I would enjoy it sometime if everyone would lay down on the floor and not applaud and not pay any attention to me... I don't want an encore, don't give me an encore, unless you really want it. Just do what you want when I play."
- Iggy Pop
Sometimes at sunrise, I think about how beautifully silent the world is. It's like I'm the only person and its all mine. My biggest wish is that the hour when the morning is most beautifully quiet and tranquil would last for 24 hours one time, and I could just sit outside reading and hearing the birds sing without the harsh sun beating down on me. I can't even put into words how beautiful it would be. The day is too bright and loud, the night too dark and blind, the sunset too corny and red. The morning, well, it's just perfect. I have a strange penchant for the morning. It's the reason I sometimes stay up all night.
Things are more beautiful when you're drunk with exhaustion. But that's another post for another day.

"Remember that God has enabled you to become an example of love, forgiveness and brotherly coexistence ... I call on you not to hate because hate does not leave a space for a person to be fair and it makes you blind and closes all doors of thinking and keeps away one from balanced thinking and making the right choice.
I also call on you not to hate the peoples of the other countries that attacked us and differentiate between the decision-makers and peoples."- Saddam Hussein
It's interesting what revelations people seem to find in their final days. I hope I'm not a hypocrite on my deathbed.
